What is the Expected Treatment Response (ETR) Curve and How is it Relevant to My Patient's Care?

The ETR or BHI treatment Graph (seen below in red) is a prediction of how well this patient is expected to do over the course of the episode of care. Specifically it predicts the patients' BHI score over each of the next nineteen weeks after intake. It is based on the patient’s responses to questions on their intake assessment.  For Tridiuum, this equates to the predicted (i.e. expected) change in the Behavioral Health Index (BHI) for a patient receiving outpatient mental health treatment.  It is calculated from normative data for patients with similar characteristics at intake, using a statistical technique called hierarchical linear modeling (HLM), a form of regression analysis.  In essence, it answers “How does the average patient like this usually progress”?

Each time the patient completes an update assessment, their Behavioral Health Index (BHI) score will be calculated and tracked along the ETR  as a blue dot that will be connected by a blue line. If the BHI score is tracking below the red line, this indicates that the patient is doing better than expected and above the red line indicates the patient is doing worse than expected. The ups and downs of the scores provide opportunities to ask the patient what they are doing differently or if issues have arisen since the last session.

The ETR is calculated based on responses provided on the Mental Health Intake Assessment.

While there are many variables that impact the ETR, the following areas have the most significant impact in predicting the patient's likely progress:

  • The individual's BHI score at Intake

  • Medication Adherence

  • Satisfaction with Relationships

  • Ability to perform work/school/household tasks

  • Alcohol Consumption

  • Past or Recent Suicidal Ideation

  • Past or Recent Thoughts of Harming Someone Else

  • Previous or Recent Substance Use Disorders

  • Previous Hospitalization for Behavioral Health Issues

Why is the ETR only 19 weeks?

At the time we developed the ETR, we were not able to obtain a large enough sample to estimate beyond 19 weeks with precision.
